Hello

I am not sure about this.
What is the maximum time limit to surrender Indian passport after acquiring Foreign passport?

Please share your knowledge

Hi Call2Bala,

It's 3 years from the date on naturalisation certificate and not date of issue on the passport.

However you would need to do it sooner if you need an Indian tourist visa, PIO / OCI as the surrender certificate is a mandatory document required.

Hi Call2Bala,

There is a three month grace period from the date on the naturalisation certificate where you're allowed to travel using Indian passport. Bear in mind that you have to return to the UK within 3 months as well.

Does your baby have visa for UK? If not using Indian passport may not be possible as he/she won't have a UK visa to show with Indian passport during Emigration in India on your return. You can't show British passport that time as it has to be same passport using which you entered. However I'm not sure of this information. I'm in exactly the same situation and from reading around on the forum this is what I understood. I decided to be safe than sorry and I'm cancelled my travel plans until all my daughter's paperwork was in order.

People may take up citizenship, but not bother having a passport if they have no immediate travel plans. Another thing I don't understand is why they need photocopies of every single page of the indian passport, when we send them the original anyway!
That's a very good point about not having passport - its perhaps just their illogical way of working.

Asking for photocopies is a sickness that all govt offices in India share, VFS are doing the same (on behalf of mighty HCI)

VFS global are a bunch of idiots. They have sent somebody else's cancelled passport and surrender certificate to me in the prepaid envelope I had sent them! Can't they even read names properly! It is not as if the names are similar in anyway- the name of the person's documents I received does not even remotely sound like mine! I spoke to them- the lady while apologetic, didn't seem to realise the gravity of the situation. Asked me to return the wrong documents to them and they will locate mine (which they probably sent to the wrong person) and send it to me. They will, of course, pay the postal charges!

Joe Thomas- if you are on this forum and received my documents , please reply to this- I am Sandeep and you probably have my documents and I have yours!

Oh my god! that's serious... I was thinking I will ask them to send my surrendered passport / certificate by post but seems it will be better collecting it in person!!

I have acquired British nationality while being in the UK. I will now be going to Spain. Is it possible for me to surrender the Indian passport and obtain the surrender certificate while in Spain? ..and then apply for OCI while in Spain? I seem to find no information on the Indian Embassy's website in Spain. Thanks.

Also, I had a question relating to the Indian passport - when that has been surrendered, is the passport returned or does the embassy keep hold of the passport? Thanks.

Application received by vfs global: 12/5/14
Wrong set of documents received : 21/5/14 (vfs global sent somebody else's documents to me! Spent all of 21/5/14 making heated telephone calls)
Wrong documents sent back: 22/5/14
Surrender certificate with cancelled passport received : 28/5/14

Hi,
Recently I got my British Passport and I want to surrender my Indian Passport and I want to confirm what are the documents required for surrendering the Indian passport. The documents are
1. Indian Passport
2. self attested photocopy of all pages of Ind Pass
3. self attested photocopy of British Passport only Photo page
4. self attested photocopy of Naturalization certificate

Are these documents are enough for surrendering the Indian Passport or do u want me to include any more documents. And I want to know whether I need to take the photocopy of all pages of British Passport.

Thanks.

That's correct. HCI website has not been updated. The Hayes VFS centre has been closed and replaced by Hounslow office.

You won't get email or sms unless you have paid for this service.

Best way is to check status on VFS web site.

Is this true? I thought the cancelled passport was returned.
Please could someone confirm?

Hi all,

I have couple of questions:

1. Should I send the expired passport as well?

2. Should I take copy of all pages on the expired passport and send it?

Any advise please? I just wanted to double-check

Many thanks.
