USA Visa or ESTA required?

Post by double2double5 » Tue Oct 23, 2018 9:27 pm

I was an Indian citizen & passport holder until recently and my Indian passport has a valid B1/B2 US Visa, valid till 2024. This visa is on one of my older Indian passport (which was subsequently cancelled when I ran out of pages) but I still could use it to travel - I used it twice last year (while I was still an Indian citizen)

I acquired British Citizenship earlier this year and I have another USA trip coming up - do I/can I apply for ESTA? ESTA website says "applicant should not possess a valid visitors visa", which I technically do possess.

Has anyone else been in this situation?

You must travel on your B1/B2 US Visa, until it runs out you will not be eligible for VWP

You would need to check if your US visa is still valid on a passport your are no longer entitled to, as you can no longer use an Indian passport as you have lost your Indian citizenship when you became British.

Spoke to US Customs & Border Protection - my US visa is no longer valid as I no longer hold a valid Indian passport. It's validity is perpetuated by possessing an Indian passport, which in my case it is not applicable.
