owning a business in the uk without work permit

Post by echo » Sun Jun 24, 2007 2:08 am

hello. I have a question and hope that someone here can answer me. I came to this country 6 years ago and applied for asylum. they gave me home office papers without work permit. my application was rejected but they did not send me back and I am still waiting for an answer on my application. I contacted the home office several times but they never replied and I also tried to get a NI number but they said no.

So I am not allowed to work and my father has been helping me with my finances all these years. now he wants to buy a place and he wants me to own it. not work there but it would be my place. I dont know if I can do this? could someone please help. can I have my own shop in the UK without a work permit? it is a wonderful opportunity and I dont know what to do.

Hello Echo,

where are you from, originally? Do you have any form of status, or any outstanding applications?
I am not, and cannot, offer legal advice to particular people. I can only discuss general areas of immigration law.

People should always consider obtaining professional advice about their own particular circumstances.

If you go to the hmrc site, you can see the obligations required to be a uk company, as resident or non resident.
As you can have a business without being present in the UK, it is not necessary to have a work permit but it really all depends on the business.
This does not apply to self employed as self employed implies you are a legal resident and you have the right to work so you would need a to be incorporated company or ltd
