Partner refused ni number

Hi all, i hope some one can me please. At the begining of the i made a joint claim for child tax credits with my partner who is an overstayer. He was sent to the job centerto apply for ni number. Obviously we knew it would be refused due to him not having premission to work, and it was. I rang ctc office to let them know and today i rang again and the guy i spoke to said a temp number has been issused. Does anyone know how long this will last(because its a temp number) and weather that means payments will be made soon. thanx howpe i have posted in the right place.
