You have some enhanced rights to work, reside and travel within the EU. However, they can vary a bit country to country. They are not very strong right now, but there are some you can exercise.
If you leave the EU, then you will be starting from zero again.
After ten years, maybe it is possible for you to naturalize as a French citizen? Then you would have full EU rights, and you would have visa waiver rights to visit (NOT work!) in countries such as the U.S.
Your current citizenship and the country you are interested in is important. If you are alone or if you have a family, will you relocate permanently or temporarily, and if you have a job offer or if you are a private business owner/operator are all important factors.
