Well, it depends on what's important to you: climate, people, average salary, cost of living . . .

Each area has its own beauty. I've driven across the country twice and lived in the northeast, southeast, midwest, and southwest. San Diego was my favourite because of the food, weather, and people. It has some of the best weather. The people are laid back and really nice, and I love Mexican food. It's really beautiful there. I know for many people weather is an issue.

Southwest: Hot and dry, which makes it not seem so hot.
South: Hot and humid and in tornado ally.
Southeast: Hot and humid with hurricane season (NC and southern VA don't get hit as often by hurricanes, but it does happen. They also tend to get the left overs and are hit by tropical storms.
Northeast: Hot and humid to mild summers and cold winters with snow/ice/rain.
North: More mild summers, but rarely have mild winters. Expect a bit of snow and ice.
Northwest: Tends to have a mix. Summers and winters are pretty mild and can be wet.

The other thing to consider are taxes. You will have to look at each individual state. While federal taxes are a standard deduction from you salary, as well as your basic state tax, each state controls sales tax, property tax, and the like. In some states, like NC, there is sales tax on clothing, while in PA there isn't.

Anyway, just a few things to consider. Best of luck.
