Update: still no debit taken and no acknowledgement sent. Phoned UKBA and was told to hang up and try option 1, then 2 (for applications not yet submitted). Then I got a recording saying the call centre was closed for 'essential staff training' and I should ring back later today.

bit update, 16 days for UKVI to acknowledge my application, hope can get some good news soon.

I don't know how true it is because when I applied using NCS several months back I got ack letter and recently my wife applied in Oct and she also got the ack letter although she got it a bit late compared to other people who reported their timeline. She also provided an email address but she never got any emails.
