British passport and name split

Post by sham111 » Thu Feb 18, 2016 9:03 pm

Hi Guys,

I would need your valuable advise apologies if this was asked earlier.

Receive my British passport with Surname a b and first name as XXX as it was on my previous indian passport now i wish to split name as surname a and first name b.

1) I have to do a deed poll for this (can I do this with any Solicitor)?
2) Apply for a new british passport with deed poll and current british passport
3)Should I require to change in my naturalisation as well?
4) Indian passport is no longer available as I have Surrender
5) Applu for OCI with new british passport

Has any one done this process please advise much appreciated.

Many Thanks in advance.

Many Thanks

1. You don't need a solicitor. You can do it online yourself.

2. Yes

3. No

4. Don't know, ask in 'Other Countries' forum further down the main page.

5. As per #4

1) You can do deed poll yourself or via solicitor.

https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-pol ... -deed-poll

2) Yes, you can apply after. Make sure you have cancelled/surrendered all non-British passports with the old name. HMPO will need proof you have done so. They want to see consistency in names.

3) As I understand, name change is not possible on certificate of naturalisation or registration. Any changes in name should be supported with deed of change of name.

https://www.gov.uk/changing-passport-in ... -documents

4) As above, make sure you get your non-British passport with old name cancelled.

5) Yes

Thanks for the information.

Just a quick one as my name is abc(forname) xyz(surname)
Here on bank account hmrc etc
On my british passport is xyz abc(as surname) xxx(first name)
On the deed poll should i say old name xyz abc as per british passport and
New name abc(first name) xyz (surname).

Plz let me know if the above is correct process?

Also if any one has applied with above and successfully received second passport plz do share timelines and experience so others can benefit.

Many Thanks in Advance

Hi sham111 - yes I think this would work. Make sure you send along with the deed poll, a cover letter explaining what you are doing. As long as there are no conflicting names in any uncancelled passports, name change should be accepted.

Many Thanks JohnnyZee.

I did applied with my current British passport and deed poll that's it. I didn't include cover letter or uncancelled passport as checked with some one on customer services and they said it should be sufficient.

Did they call you for an Inverview for second time, please advise as it will help as I am really tense now.

Do you recommend me to call them and check.

Please advise.

Sham - this is my first adult passport, hence the interview call. I don't think you will need one, but who knows! All the best.

Update.

Received a call from passport case worker, she asked me to make a new deed as my indian passport has no surname based on my first british passport , i did told her that i do not current have indian passport and will never get one as india does not allow dual citizen ship, for this she said to make a statement and confirm this in writing without sending any extra doucments and the new deed poll should confirm that, not sure how to go about it as i previous send them
change of name deed as current name : abc xyz new name xyz abc.

Question.
1) Should I make deed poll current name abc xyz nosurname new name xyz abc ?

Not sure how would i go about it please advise.

Many Thanks in advance.

I did the same way and now they want something like <abc xyz>(First name) XXX(no surname) to new name XyZ(First name) abc (Surname).

So probabily wait for the letter they'll send me go from there.

Sham,

Just wondering what is the difference between these two sites for deed poll

https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-pol ... -deed-poll
and
http://www.deedpoll.org.uk/

In second link, one can clearly see separate questions for forename and surname (see below link. Both current and future surname and forenames are asked as per below link, so there is no room for confusion.
https://secure.deedpoll.org.uk/DeedPollAdult.html

But from the forms in the gov.uk link, only full name is asked, which makes one wonder how to distingush between surname and forenames.

Preciously john353,

And hence the question if I use https://secure.deedpoll.org.uk/DeedPollAdult.html
I do not have surname now so would be XXX or none in the surname field which confuses me.

I am not sure how to explain this when I receive a letter from case worker as its completely different in the link https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-pol ... -deed-poll .

If it is the https://secure.deedpoll.org.uk/DeedPollAdult.html link, then there is a helpline number in that link you can call to find out whether to leave blank or enter XXX for current surname.

My question is why are their two links (and different forms) for the deed poll, i.e. are both links (the one above) and the gov.uk link equally valid? If the https://secure.deedpoll.org.uk/DeedPollAdult.html is equally valid as the gov.uk link, then I would for this one as then you can clearly distinguish between forename and surname.

I will end up in a similar situation to yours soon, so trying to get prepared for this (see thread below)

Spoke to Passport advise line and regarding change of name deed , the said just state your full name as abc xyz XXX (XXX refers to surname being unused) and new name xyz abc.

I'll send it and wait for the update. Hope it should be sufficient.

To distinguish between forenames and surname, you can put the former in small letters and the latter in capitals e.g. John Joshua SMITH.

John Joshua = Forenames
SMITH = Surname

Sham, That is great to know! I received my approval letter just today (letter dated March 15) and will ring Council on Monday to see if they have my Naturalisation certificate.

My situation is similar to yours with no surname and so can you please confirm again the following.

1) If the name in your earlier Indian passport was Aaa Bbb under given names and surname was blank.....How did your name appear in your naturalisation certificate? Was it like *Bbb* Aaa or Aaa Bbb with no surname?

2) In your first British passport, I understand it was XXX in the forename field because the surname cannot be empty. But in the surname section was it Aaa Bbb exactly as in your Indian passport or was it Bbb Aaa?

3) For the deed poll for your second British passport, did you follow the below webpage? Can you please confirm if you did the deed poll yourself and also did it cost anything to do the deed poll?
https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-pol ... -deed-poll

Hey John,
Steps to follow
1) Naturalisations was Aaa Bbb without " "

2) Apply for British passport online is best fill in XXX on surname field and the fill in your full first name as Aaa Bbb. You'll get your British passport as in Surname field Aaa Baa with first name XXX.

3)Once you get your British passport. surrender Indian passport and obtain Surrender certificate.

4) Deed poll do the free one online many available to use with 2 witness and make sure you write current full name as Aaa Bbb XXX and then new name as Aaa BBB or Baa AAA which every way you want to split.

5) Reapply for British passport again online only and fill in the name you wish to have forname and surname then on previous name field fill in your previous name as appears on british passport. 2 passport photos. surrender certificate and current british passport then make sure you write a cover letter explaining everything.

6) You'll get your second british passport then apply for OCI.

Hope this helps

Hi Sham111,

I am planning to follow the exact process as yours. Did you get your OCI card with new name yet? Did you have any issues?

Thanks
