Does abandoning residency application render me out of statu

Back in 1999 I applied to become a lawful permanent resident. I abandoned the application by leaving the country part way through it. Does that automatically mean I was out of status during that period? I was previously adopted (under 16) and abandoned the application when I was just over 18.
