Travelling on indefinite leave to remain with expired SA passport

Post by Alicat117 » Thu Apr 12, 2018 9:10 pm

Hi guys,

I’ve been around the houses with the UK border agency and any other immigration related department I could find a phone number for but no real answer.

I’m a South African living in London and have indefinite leave to remain (biometric card) due to having British ancestry. I also have a Brazilian passport (Through my mother) because it has come in hand for visa free travel in the EU.

Thing is, my South African passport is about to expire and I have holidays planned soon. (My fault for not checking expiry dates)

But as I have the Brazilian passport, does anyone know if there’d be issues leaving and coming back into the UK on my Brazilian passport although my indefinite leave to remain permit says that I’m a South African.

Any knowledge would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ali

ILR status is not attached to your nationality. You should be able to enter the UK with a valid passport and a valid BRP

My main concern is that on the back of the biometric ILR permit, it does state I’m South African.

I will have my expired SA passport and valid Brazilian passport with me.
Wouldn’t that mean it’s attached to my South African citizenship?

No it's not. ILR is not attached to your nationality.

Hi Zimba88

Just wanted to let you know I came back from a trip yesterday and you’re 100% correct. Thanks for taking the time.
