Visa application. Does being employed or unemployed matter?

Post by pyke » Sun May 11, 2008 2:17 pm

When applying for a visa to enter the UK on HSMP status, there is a section 'Current finances and employment' on the application form. I was wondering if it makes a difference if the applicant is employed or unemployed? Then again, employed full-time or employed part-time? Does it matter? I'm employed full-time but may be switching to part-time employment.

Since one is traveling to UK on HSMP to establish oneself economically, it is expected that one will leave his job before he actually travels. So it doesn't matter whether one is employed or unempoyed or employed part-time when one makes his application for Entry Clearance (visa).

In the form, all you need is to provide documentary of your finances to prove to the ECO that you'll be able to sustain yourself in UK to start with. The source of this financial ability doesn't necessary have to be "current or existing" employment, it can very well be savings accrued over a period of time.

A cover letter explaining that you have recently resigned from work because of your plans to travel to UK in the near future should be sufficient. In the form you can mention "not working" in this case.

In case of part-time employment, there is no need of an explanation.
