Schengen Visa travelling conditions

Hope everybody's having a good time, friend of mine has been granted schengen visa as a spouse of UK national. He himself is Pakistani but holds BRP.

His plans were to travel to few schengen states with his family next month. For some circumstances, his wife can't go with him.

Now the visa doesn't state anything other than spouse of EEA/EU national, will he be able to travel with me (friend) instead?

or does he need to inform, or new visa is required?

He is free to travel on his own.

From what I understand it is a Directive 2004/38 visa, given to accompany / travel with the EU family.

He could attempt travelling on his own without his EU family members, but technically visa is given to travel together AND to travel on his own he should get a regular Schengen visa.
