becoming Irish to accelerate wife citizenship

Post by jul1 » Sat Dec 29, 2018 12:02 am

Im EU citizen, living here for 7 years now, im registered permanent resident. My wife has Eufam stamp4 for 5 years, she is here for 1 year 9 months now, we are both full time working.

Im thinking to get Irish citizenship so she would be able to apply as well after 3 years of being here, instead of the normal 5.

Any ideas is it worth it not worth it?

We can gain 2 years, but i think they would revoke the eufam card and then we have to apply for a normal stamp 4, she is visa required to every EU country, so now we really enjoy the hassle free travel with the eufam card. On a normal stamp4 she needs schengen visa and re-entry irish visa (i want to minimize this period, cause we had enough of applying for visas), and the hassle of applying for stamp4....

Would they make it a hassle to give her stamp 4, after being here for lets say 2.5 years on eufam? Would there be any time that she would loose out of work? i mean if they revoke the eufam card (cause i will become IRish, so i cannot use eu treaty rights anymore) but the new stamp 4 is still pending? is it possible scenario?

What is the typical time frame to accept citizenship application? I heard it is 18 months now?

I feel this is pretty much a personal choice rather than something we can comment on, if it makes sense for you and your wife then go for it.

Depending on how much you travel to have a Stamp 4 EUFAM it's nice because there is no need for a visa to the EU but if you don't travel that much it makes sense to transfer from Stamp 4 EUFAM to Stamp 4. Because she's currently a legal resident in Ireland the only thing you need to do is book an appointment once you get your Irish passport and get her Stamp 4 on the spot at the Dublin office or at your local Gardai station, no need for her to be out of work.

I don't think Irish naturalisation is taking 18 months for EU residents in Ireland, I would expect INIS making a decision closer to the 6 months mark for EU citizens residents here.

My wife`s eufam card is valid until her passport expires, in 2021, someone said that if i become Irish she wont have to get stamp4 until she will naturally renew the card, is that true? So lets say this year 2019 i become Irish, can she still travel on eufam card till the expiration date in 2021?

If that is possible than no question, i would apply for citizenship now.

In theory you will be dual citizen if you apply for Irish citizenship so I guess she can keep the Stamp 4 EUFAM but the question is - if she applies for Irish citizenship is she going to apply as the spouse of an Irish citizen but using the benefits of Stamp 4 EUFAM? Have you heard of anyone doing this before?

I would get in touch with INIS and double check with them.
