Residency requirements on a permanent visa?

I'm pretty new to all these and was wondering if someone can tell me what the residency requirements are for a permanent residence visa, if any? For someone who does not intend on applying for citizenship. For example being resident in Australia for 2 out of the initial 5 years? Or is that solely for citizenship purposes?
