Out of interest, does anyone know what happens to an appication between the arrival date and the issue of a case number? In our case it was exactly three weeks, and i wondered if they conduct some sort of initial review of the paperwork, or if that was the first time someone had looked at it......

With all due respect, this topic is for form UKM Registration (ie born before Jan 1983 to British born mothers and completely different rules) updates and experience and not for form AN naturalisation applications (especially given you only applied on form AN spouse of BC a month ago).

Durham. Hopefully yours goes through quickly as well. I was really surprised to see it processed so quickly. My situation is unusual in that both my parents were born in the US, but due to several citizenship law changes in the UK, I qualified for citizenship through my mother (she became a UK citizen by marrying my father, so I inherited citizenship through her). I used a registered UK solicitor for the process, as I was confused a bit and didn't want to waste my time/money mucking about on my own.
Here is my UKM timeline:
Sept 28 2018 - Sent an inquiry to a solicitor
Oct 30 2018 - Application sent to Home Office (via solicitor)
Nov 14 2018 - Application received by Home Office
Dec 4 2018 - Notice to schedule biometrics
Dec 20 2018 - Biometrics done (at local USCIS office)
Jan 17 2019 - Applicattion approved by Home Office
Feb 22 2019 - Notice to schedule swearing in ceremony from local UK Consulate
Mar 6 2019 - Swearing-in ceremony to be held in Consulate
I'm so excited to go to my ceremony, especially since it will be on my birthday!!
I've heard today been approved, my ceremony is 17th April 2019 
You are not required to send your US passport to HMPO to get a first British passport. The application only requires you to send a color copy of all pages of your current uncanceled passports.
