PPS Number, Job, etc.. Are my information correct?

Post by Ro777 » Fri Aug 23, 2019 1:12 pm

Hello,

there’s been some confusion for me about some things regarding moving to Ireland

I have researched and just want to make sure that I understand all these things correctly:

Move to Ireland and PPS Number:
As a citizen of another EU country, I can move to Ireland, rent an apartment and seek work without any permission and without having a job yet by that time. I can stay for 3 months without having a job.
When I find a job, I get my PPS number. Before that, I don’t need this PPS number. (I think I can’t get it anyway without a job).
I mean, when I’m new to Ireland I cannot have a PPS number.

Bank account:
As soon as I have an address there, I can open a bank account.

Health insurance:
As soon as I have an address in Ireland I’m covered by the public healthcare system.

You are mostly correct. The only thing is that you should get your PPS Number as soon as you arrive in Ireland, if your intention is to find a job here. You can apply for a PPS Number when you have your proof of address.

They will ask you the reason for applying for a PPS number. You can say that you intend to work here, or you can say that you want to get an Irish driving licence. It doesn't really matter.

Do NOT get a PPS number after you get a job. It will be too late.

What does that mean?

If you do not have a PPSN when you get a job offer, you will need to pay emergency taxes on the first month or two for your salaries, which will be significantly higher than the normal tax amount. Also employers (especially smaller ones) are less likely to favour someone who’s not immediately ready for a job.

Those taxes can be subsequently claim or an adjustment made to the person's tax code or award of tax credit can be made which takes the over taxation into account.

I was just puzzled by the concept that 'it will be too late'.

Okay that makes sense. Thanks for this useful information and thanks to all other answers too.

Is it a big deal to get this PPS number or is it just a quick appointment or visit at the respective office?

I got mine many years ago so I don’t know if the process is still the same. It’s not a big deal. Just fill out a form.
Looking at https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/s ... tml#ld1a9a
It says some centres need an appointment while others allow walk-in. You just provide them with your passport/proof of address, and fill out a form. You will get your PPSN in a few days by post.
