Hi Ian, so they only returned your docs after acceptance of FBR?

Sorry but I don't know what you mean by 'acceptance'.

You get your original documents returned when/with the FBR certificate e.g. at the end of the process.

Has anyone very recently applied for FBR? I applied 3 weeks ago directly to Ireland, it was marked as delivered by mail tracking almost 3 weeks ago but they have still to acknowledge receipt.

Looking through peoples posts here recently it seems to be about a week but I am on weeks.... I am aware I am at the back of a huge queue but from what I can tell there is no way to chase to make sure that the application wasnt misplaced
Mine was received 9 August 2019, I was notified it had been received by dfat, the same day the postal service showed it as received.

Was there really an FBR employee on the board ranting at members? I totally missed it. Why do I always miss the exciting stuff?

Can anyone tell me the gist of what what said - obviously without the profanity or whatever else it was that got his/her post moderated?

I actually think it would be great if we really had someone from the dept on this board. Then we might be able to get a better handle on what is going on and more insight into the process itself.

I’ve been observing this board quite frequently recently and did not see their post, mods must have censored it quite quickly. I agree, someone from the FBR on here would make this forum much more informative.

Wow I almost can't believe I'm writing this

I called Dublin again this morning to see if my documents had been attached, and was told my application had already been approved! That means my entire application process took just over a month

The adviser said some embassies / consulates can make their own decisions on FBR applications, without sending all the paperwork to Dublin, which happened in my case. I can only assume because I applied at a small consulate, my application was probably the only one they had to deal with, and hence I got approved so quickly

It seems that the document checking process that I referred to in my previous message was actually the full application check, rather than a pre-screening prior to sending to Dublin

The adviser did mention though that it could be a while before I get my certificate, because my passport photos and address proofs need to be sent to Dublin (so these can be added to the certificate). He estimated it could be 1.5 months either way, depending on diplomatic mail schedules.

My timeline is thus so far:
11 Jun - Application Submitted Online
26 Jun - Documents Submitted
23 Jul - Documents added to application
25 Jul - Name entered into FBR
Quick update from me

Certificate was printed two days ago (28 Aug) and is waiting to be shipped out to China

Hopefully all going well will have it in my hands by end of Sep
Got an email from the consulate and collected my certificate yesterday afternoon!!!

So the final timeline ended up as:
11 Jun - Application Submitted Online
26 Jun - Documents Submitted
23 Jul - Documents added to application
25 Jul - Name entered into FBR
28 Aug - Certificate printed
17 Sep - Certificate collected from consulate

A little over three months from start to finish - which looking at Sulla's list is the fastest non-expedited FBR application I can see. Guy in the consulate was even surprised everything had come back so quickly

Thanks everyone for all the advice and updates, and now onto the passport application

Yes, an employee might provide useful insight into their operations. But I wonder if the referenced poster really was an FBR employee. I can believe that employees might take offence at what is said about them here. But that's assuming they bother to read this forum. I wonder why any of them would do that. Scrolling through all of this is time consuming and often boring for those who have an interest in their own applications. But for anyone else? Also, I would think their first attempt to defend the agency would be something less than a "rant".

It would not surprise me if it were just a troll post.

Sulla thank you for your kind words about my application. I just can’t understand why it is taking so long as it is now over 15 months with no information on progress. I have tried phoning and emailing but get no response. I know this won’t speed up the application but I just worry it has gone astray and I wait forever. My mother wants her documents back and I have to tell her I have no idea when this will be. From your list my application is clearly way older than others and whilst I did have to send further info that was last year.

I just hope I hear soon

There does seem to be an inconsistency in acknowledgement receipt emails too.

I received mine within 3 days of posting the hard copy documentation (from U.K. to Dublin) I see that others don’t get one for several months or even at all! I’ll admit it was a relief to be assured that everything had definitely got onto someone’s desk and not lying forgotten in a postal sack somewhere!

This was my biggest concern, especially the amount of originals you need to include.

Now the 6-12 month wait begins

Shouldn't be too long the turnaround time for first time adult applying for a passport is according to the website min 30 working days.

Hi all,

Just got my email asking to confirm address! Full timeline so far:
  • Application sent 8 Oct 2018
  • Email saying application received 8 Mar 2019
  • Email asking for address clarification 9 Sep 2019
As an added complication, I've moving house in 3 weeks, so I've told them they better hurry up!

Ross
Hi Ross,

That is quite a quick turnaround time from the UK if counted from the date of confirmation email. I think it is probably better to go with the date of physical receipt of the application at the London embassy in this case. can you remember when your application was received there?
Hi Sulla,

I never received confirmation of receipt from the London Embassy to the best of my recollection. but I sent it via recorded post so I know they got it the day after I sent it off, i.e. 9th October 2019.

Is the general consensus that the 6-12 months starts when an Embassy receives an application or when Balbriggan receives it? (though I think newer/current applications go direct to Dublin/Balbriggan?)

My application was received at the London Embassy on Tue 15th January 2019 (recorded mail) but I had the confirmation email from Balbriggan on Mon 25th February 2019.

It doesn't make a great deal of difference to me, as that's just over a month apart. However, some other applicants on here have seen a gap of 3-4 months between London/Embassy recorded mail receipt and Balbriggan confirmation email.

Patiently waiting here and hoping for my FBR certificate before March 2020. Will have to wait and see whether the timeframes improve (e.g. due to efficiencies, etc.) or worsen (e.g. due to increasing volume of applications).

All the best to everyone else going through the process.

Legally, the start date begins when the recorded mail containing the physical application and the supporting documentation (complete) arrives at the designated address. This is supported by a written statement from the head of the FBR section.

With that said, there are plenty of instances of FBR employees attempting to say that it is the date of the confirmation email that the application timeline runs from.

You can take your pick from those options. Personally, I strongly support the use of the date of physical receipt and (when available) use it for listing application timelines.

Sent off documents in September 2018 (not sure of the exact date but about this time a year ago). Application received on January 14th 2019, so looks like I have a few more months to wait.

My slight worry is that my British passport (scanned in for application) has since expired and been renewed, so I hope that doesn't affect the application too much.

Shouldn't be too long the turnaround time for first time adult applying for a passport is according to the website min 30 working days.

just to set expectations, my wife applied for hers earlier in the year from the UK and it took best part of 4 months.
Friends first time application received 15/08/19 estimated issue 06/11/2019. Passport dispatched 17/09/19 applying from Scotland.
