Are your relatives renting.

If they are renting, are you on the tenancy agreement?

hey..thanks for your reply.

Well, there is no formal rental agreement between us but I am paying them a certain amount every month. So what paper shall i ask them to provide me as a proof which might be accepted by universal credit?

please let me know.

Are you saying that your relatives have rented a property in their names and they rent a room to you?

Or do they own their own house and rent you a room?

You might be able to.

Note that the cost of the rent of the room is not the same as paying one amount for the room, ulitilies and food.

Are your relatives declaring this income to HMRC if the cost of the room only is more than £7,500 a year? Have they got permission to rent a room from their mortgage company? Some mortgage companies will not allow somebody to rent if they are on benefits.

The above was about benefits you might be able to claim for help with your rent, if your relatives are not close relatives.

The following is about the rent a room scheme for your relatives:-

"Income Tax is payable on rental income you receive.

If you’re not in the Rent a Room scheme, you’ll be charged Income Tax on any rental income you get after business letting expenses
."
