Irish spouse visa

Hi guys my friend has irish passport and she is applying for her Pakistani husband who is in pakistan. they are also required for her original Irish passport with other documents. Please tell me if you have any idea for how long they can keep her irish passport. Will they keep untill decision will be made or will they return after couple of week. Because without passport she is not able to travel. Please Please help
