I got Irish citizenship through naturalization and working in another EU country now.
My new arrival is expected in a month's time and FBR documentation requirement requires naturalisation certificate to be attached with the FBR application of new born.
However, they never returned my naturalisation certificate upon issuing the passport and i never asked for it because i had the passport.
Does anyone had a similar situation ... any solution or suggestions?

They should have returned it to you. They would put all documents that you sent to them, both original documents and any copies, along with the passport in a big envelope. Did the envelope you received contain all other documents but the certificate? Or did just send only the passport to you?

Either way, chances are that they would not be able to find it now if you haven't asked them immediately when you found that your certificate was missing in the return envelope. You should write to the citizenship department (where you sent your naturalisation application) to ask for a statement confirming your citizenship.

Hello, everyone! Thank you for contributing to this thread--I've read through the whole thing and it has provided a great deal of insight for the FBR process.

My husband and I are currently trying to locate all of the documents for his grandfather (born in 1887). As of right now we have his marriage certificate (certified copy), his death certificate (certified copy), his US draft card that states his birthplace (actual original), and a list of passengers on the boat that brought him to the US (actual original).

From my understanding of the process, that just means that we have to find the birth certificate, right? It doesn't seem that there was a birth certificate, but my husband did find something saying that there was a baptismal certificate. We wrote the church where he was baptized to see if they would have any information.

However, I also understand that using a baptismal certificate will require getting a letter from the HSE saying that they can't find the birth certificate. I went to see how to do this online and figured that trying to obtain it online would be better/faster (for slightly dramatic reasons, we want to get started with this application ASAP), but want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly. Do I need to get a formal letter in the mail, or is email fine? It says you can only order "full standard certificates" online, but I don't know what that means.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! I've done a lot of reading about the process, but this last part is a tad confusing to me.

I'd call direct if you can.If you order online and they can't find it they send an email about it if they don't find one and you can reply then as well. This happened to a friend of mine. Fortunately, I all ready had a copy of the civil record and realized a spelling discrepancy. She emailed the copy I gave her and they found it.Have you searched all the civil records?

I was in the same position as your husband. Yes, you just need to get his grandfather's birth certificate (plus all the info for himself and his parents of course.) In order to obtain a new birth certificate for his grandfather, you need to do the following:

1. Write to: [The Civil Registration Service, Office of the Registrar General, Government Offices, Convent Road, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon] and request they carry out an official search for your husband's grandfather's birth certificate. You will need to include as much information as you have to help them carry out this search. You also need to pay a fee. I believe this was 20 Euros, but you ought to phone them to confirm this on +353 90 663 2900. (Also confirm whether the address I've given above is still correct.)

2. If the Civil Registration Service are unable to locate the birth certificate, they will send you (by post) a piece of paper saying '...a search was made in the records for an entry relating to the birth of xxxx for the years xxx to xxx inclusive. No entry, corresponding with the particulars given in your recent application, was found in that period.'

3. You also need to obtain a baptismal certificate for your husband's grandfather. To do this, I located the (140 year old) baptism register from his parish church in online records from the National Library of Ireland. I phoned the current parish priest and explained the situation and he asked me to send him the information, including a print-out of the old baptism register. I did this, and by return of post I was sent a brand new baptism certificate which the priest had created.

4. You will then need to apply for a Late Registration of Birth to the Civil Registration Service on Form CRA 12(L). You will have this form notarised and include:
-the baptism certificate
-the marriage details of the grandfather's parents
-if born in a hospital or nursing home, either their birth records or a letter confirming it's now closed
-the date/place of the grandfather's parents' deaths, plus certificates if outside of Ireland
-confirmation that no older siblings are in a position to apply to register the late birth
-Form B1(L) (Which is just a list of the above required information.)
-The confirmation that the Civil Registration Service couldn't locate the birth certificate (see 2 above.)

5. Once the Late Registration of Birth is complete, you will get email confirmation, and you can then apply for a copy of his birth certificate online. Again, this is from the Office of the Registrar General. You need the 'Long form certificate' which will cost you 20 Euros.

Job done.

(If you need help finding the online baptism registers, try looking at familysearch.org. That's where I found my grandfather's. They have a lot of scanned microfiches of documents which are stored in the National Library of Ireland, organised by Parish. It takes a lot of patience to go through them all to locate the entry for your grandfather, but it will be a lot easier if you know the definite date and location he was baptised.)

Hey Sulla, I was added to the FBR on the 18th October, certificate received 3rd November :)

I submitted recently purchased originals of copies of:
My grandfather’s marriage certificate
My grandfather’s birth certificate
My father’s birth certificate

It was surprisingly easy to locate the copies with the Irish and British authorities but you need as much information as possible (eg church name, parents occupations, date of registration).

My passport application appears to have sailed through via the Stockholm embassy - expecting a phone call to collect any day now!

I got my confirmation of receipt email from DFAT on 8 March 2019 and haven't heard anything since then - but Sulla's list indicates my time is nearly here!

I will update when I hear something - it would be a nice Christmas present to even get the confirmation of address email.

Caveat - I have only read a couple hundred of the 1650 in this thread. Many are status updates, which doesn't help me when looking for a FAQ. ;)

My grandfather was born in Dublin. The last official document is a day away in the mail and I am ready to logon and submit my app.

Question: Is there anything I can do as far as packing the documents and sending them that can accelerate or improve the process? I was going to send a sheet that had thumbnails of all the documents and explanations to make it easier to see everything. Additionally, I have the photocopies of his birth registration and marriage. Even though not official, they obviously add more credibility to my case. Am I overthinking?

Hi Jeremy ,

You could provide thumbnails but It won't make a diffference I wouldn't think in the speed of processing it but it would help the team looking through your application .

To make sure your application goes smoothly I would send everything the DFA ask for so send all the orignials of the certificates plus copies for each one and follow all the guide lines on the DFA website .

It won't speed it up but making it neat, organized and easy to process always helps I'd say. I separated mine into three parts - Grandparent, Parent and Applicant (me).I put each persons documents in a different manila folder and labeled each as such & listed what was in each with date/place.I also put the application number at bottom of each envelope. Then I put them all in a bigger envelope with my name, address, & application number. For my grandfather, I added a copy of his entry in the 1911 Irish Census.I also added a letter explaining my mother's second marriage as well as a copy of my brothers FBR (from 1999). I also notarized everything and anything I could. Basically, made it easier then just a big pile of documents.

Curious...I seen a few posts mention sending photocopies as well as the original documents. Why is this, there was no mention of this on the breakdown of what I was requested to send? Just said original/certified documents.

Thanks 😊

As I await my FBR (I'm from the April 2019 cohort), I was hoping to do a search for all posts related to passport application photos, rather than pester you all with questions that may have been asked and answered already. I can't seem to find how to do a search in this forum...there is no way, correct? I'd have to go through each post individually?
Thanks,
Fvigaud

Hi Rinefitz

I believe you need to send copies and I am sure this is required but I have found this list,
Adult applicant applying on the basis of an Irish born Grandparent

Documents relating to the applicant (unless stated, originals must be submitted):

Completed, signed and witnessed application form (see list of witnesses at 1 above)
Original civil birth certificate (showing parental details)
Original civil marriage certificate (if applicable) OR other change of name document (if applicable)
* Photocopy of current state-issued ID document (i.e. passport, drivers licence, national identity card) certified as a true copy *
of the original by application form witness
2 separate original proofs of address
4 colour photographs (2 of which to be witnessed) – do not attach these to the application form

Documents relating to the grandparent born in Ireland (unless stated, originals must be submitted):

Original civil birth certificate of Irish born grandparent (showing parental details)
Original civil marriage certificate of Irish born grandparent (if applicable) OR other change of name document (if applicable)
* Photocopy of current state-issued ID document (i.e. passport, drivers licence, national identity card) certified as a true copy of the original by a professional from the list of witnesses OR original civil death certificate (if applicable *

Yes that’s the list that was with my application checklist. Only photocopies required were current ID certified by the witness. Oh well, mine was posted last week and can only send what I was asked to send 😊

I guess it must depend on how you apply. Mine was an online application. Which then produces a checklist with everything you need to send off with it 📨

That’s exactly what I did, the only photocopy I sent was a notarised copy of my passport, I guess by this time next year I’ll be able to confirm if that was right or wrong :D :D

I imagine the purpose of sending photocopies is to attempt to speed up the process. This works on the assumption that the people processing the application will make photocopies themselves and therefore sending your own may cut out a small step.

In reality, we don't know what they do in the FBR department. They may make photocopies of each document or only of some. They make make multiples. It is also possible that they no longer make such copies but instead scan all application documents and store them electronically.

I would just advise everyone to rigorously follow the application guidance notes and ensure they provide all the required documents. These would be in the form of originals or certified copies for BDM certificates and notarized copies for photo ID.

After reading this forum it doesn’t surprise me that a large portion of applications just get hung up or people are asked to provide further documentation.

Just follow the guidelines people!

Yes your right and I guess I had tunnel vision with making too much effort on my application and worrying too much but it has been successful . I always try hard to make sure I do enough to gain the visas I need for my wife and once for myself .

You should be ok with your application I would guess that you shouldn't be waiting as long as some of us had to wait because the numbers are not as high now plus vast improvements have been made at the DFA .

Good luck to you

God yes! My application now feels rather urgent (it isn’t really), and I am eager to hold my new passport

I was just talking with a couple of Brits in China today. They have not yet applied for FBR, but are eligible and they have a renewed sense of urgency now. They never thought Brexit would ultimately be a reality. There may well be another uptick. I hope the FBR section is better prepared this time.

Ok Sulla, you can mark me as completely finito.

Passport arrived today 13.12.2019 taking my application precisely 12 months since I posted it in London to receiving my passport via the Stockholm Embassy.

I’m not ashamed to say I sobbed when I picked my passport up. It’s such an important piece of family history for me, not to mention the obvious.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting - I’ve a feeling you’ve timed it well so far!
