Good for travelers. Possibly bad for Immigration records?

First, they scrap Embarkation cards and departure stamps, making it difficult to find out who has left the UK and when. Now, they are scrapping Landing cards, possibly making it difficult to find out who has entered the UK and when.

What happens if the Landing/Embarkation databases gets corrupted or deleted after a few years? They won’t know who was coming or going nor when it happened. May make it harder to prove residency.

They are only implementing what they had announced almost two years ago.

Home Office announcement on 5th August 20178 - 'Outdated’ landing cards to be withdrawn as part of digital border transformation
Plans to ease travel for more than 16 million non-European passengers who arrive in the UK each year were today announced by the Home Office.

The onus of proving residency has always been on the applicant. Keeping a copy of your passport (digitally and physically) will become even more important.

And now the stress will likely be even more on residence (actually staying in the country for a while and leaving a trace with government documentation such as by working/taxes and/or applying for benefits) as opposed to mere presence (flying in and out, and possibly behaving like a visitor).

The passports of non EU travellers will still be stamped though, I take it.

Citizens of certain countries from outside the EU can now use e-passport gates, so not all non EU travellers will receive stamps on passports.

How will they know where visitors are staying?
