Travelling on Naturalisation Certificate

Post by NaS » Wed Mar 18, 2020 8:59 pm

Hi guys
My wife's has her ILR and her naturalisation ceremony for British Passport is going to be held this Friday , And due to some personal emergency we have booked our tickets to go abroad next Wednesday.

My question is that would she be able to return back to UK on her Naturalisation certificate ?
As the HO says we must return the her BRP card back within few days of the ceremony otherwise there will be a £1000 fine etc.
Should we just keep the BRP to re-enter or naturalisation certificate would be any of any help ?

What should we do in this situation ? any expert advise would be highly appreciated.

thanks

Hello

The Naturalisation Certificate is not a travel document.

If your wife is a visa-national, she won't be able to board a flight back.

is it possible to apply for the passport soon after the naturalisation from the UK and then ask someone at home to post the passport to us overseas when they receive by post ?
thanks

You can apply for a passport the same day you get your certificate but you need to submit your current foreign passport with it.

thanks for the reply but on HO site it says you need to post these both for the British passport,

You’ll need both:

your naturalisation or registration certificate
the passport you used to come into the UK or the foreign passport you’re included on

But the Passport she used to come in to the UK is expired and we made another new one since then, so we got 2 passports (1 new + 1 Old ) can we send the old Foreign passport with the application and use new one for the travel ?
as guidance says "the passport you used to come into the UK or the foreign passport you’re included on"

would that be ok ?

You have to send the current foreign passport and all uncancelled passports.

Note an expired passport is not the same as a cancelled passport which is clipped and stamped cancelled.

Would you consider delaying the ceremony until you come back?. If yes, I suggest you call the council to rearrange the ceremony.

You have to attend the ceremony within 90 days, otherwise you have to apply and pay again.

I would suggest you delay your travel slightly then or come back sooner.

Remember you are making a conscious choice to leave the UK during this virus period.
