Your friend has assumptions regarding the continuous residence that contradict the definition under the immigration rules.
Under the PBS rules, continuous residence is maintained as long as you apply for a new visa within 14 days of visa expiry and then you are granted a new visa. Her residence as per rules was maintained as she applied in-time for a new entry clearance outside the UK and returned to the UK with the same visa type. The fact she did not have a valid visa in that period is irrelevant
