Reporting changes while Naturalization Application In Process

Post by GoWentGone123 » Sat Aug 15, 2020 2:50 pm

Hi Guys! Wanted to ask a question, up-to what stage do we need to keep updating Citizenship Department of new developments for example change in employment, traffic offences or change in any other significant circumstances? I mean is it till issuance of actual passport or what?

Passport? Citizenship department does not issue passports.
You must inform them while your application is still in the processing if you get married or divorced, get convicted of any criminal offense, change your address, change or lose your job, claim social welfare, or leave the country for a long period of time.

Thanks for your reply. I understand that Naturalization department won't issue passport. My question is again the same. Do they expect us to report even after approval letter is issued and ceremony has not taken place?

Did you get an approval letter GoWentGone123 recently? Can you post your timeline?

Your question is not the same:

You're expected to report any significant change in your circumstances while your application is still in progress. I assume that approval stage is part of the proccess which will complete during official ceremony.
It is up to you to disclose all relevant information during that time. If it later comes up to their attention that you have not disclosed something important, you will be at their mercy.

The whole purpose of asking this to know our responsibility rather than to run away from it.

Once the minister signs off your application (which would have already been reviewed and signed off by two or three staff already), nobody would touch your application ever again. From that point of view, it is unnecessary to send any update to them after that (with the exception of changing your address of course).

There is no harm of sending any update to them though. As Vorona said, you want to fully cover your base and you don’t want them to get any excuse to later revoke your citizenship (if Ireland gets an extreme right wing government in the future for example).

Not true. If your application has been signed off and you were then convicted of a crime before ceremony, you application would be pulled and cancelled. It's happened before.

Can't speculate about individual cases, but it is known that they have to be informed about any significant changes in circumstances of the applicant. As applicant is not a citizen until they have attended the ceremony I would strongly advice to report it.
There are recent cases about people who lied/haven't disclosed information about their background being investigated 15 years after they were naturalised.
The least that can happen is a revocation of citizenship. What about fine up to 50 grands and imprisonment  Certainly not worth risking. The truth will be revealed.
