Irish Citizenship Application Through a Solicitor

Post by Leo_55 » Tue Sep 29, 2020 9:50 pm

Hi,

I am a stamp 4 holder, have been living in Ireland for over 6 years, and I am intending to apply for the Irish citizenship. I am thinking to use the services of a solicitor, and I am wondering if that would be a good idea. My main reason for that is to save me the time that goes into the application and any risk of error.

I would appreciate feedback from people who have gone through that experience. Many thanks in advance.

A solicitor cannot increase your chances but can help you to fill a correct application.

If you are able yourself to submit a correct application, it will have exactly the same chances as an application submitted by a solicitor on your behalf.

Sometimes citizenship applications and complex and people prefer to outsource that to a solicitor; I understand that.

In any case, go with a solicitor who is specialised or at least used to work with citizenship applications. We have already seen applications messed up by the wrong choice of solicitor.

Thanks very much for the reply. I am just looking to save time by considering a solicitor services, not to increase my chances. In fact I do not want that to influence my chances or interfere with my application in anyway.

I completed my application in under an hour. That includes filling in the application and downloading/printing off the utility bills and bank statements. From there, I just photocopied the passport and birth certificate, bring the application and copies to the solicitor to have them witnessed and certified.

I honestly don’t think getting a solicitor to do these for you would save you any time. If anything, it would take you more time to find a solicitor, research their reputation, talk to the solicitor etc. All the solicitor can do is to fill in that application form. The solicitor is still going to ask YOU to provide all the utility bills, bank statements etc. The solicitor also has to ask YOU to provide all your personal details (any offences, parents details, three Irish citizens’ signatures etc).

Saving time is a valid point. But most solicitors are going to require a meeting you two and ask you tons of questions as they are filling your application. So at the end of the day, you may spend longer filling up the solicitors about your details/situation.

But honestly, it's down to personal preferences. I used immigration solicitors in the past before I decided to keep my money and do the job myself.

Absolutely agree with the last two replies.

Unless you have a complicated case, using a solicitor will do exact opposite of saving your time, not to mention saving money.

Can i ask you is it only a solicitor who can witness and certify documents or can some other people do it?
Also how much did the solicitor cost you for signing these?

Thanks

You can get a Solicitor, a Peace Commissioner, a Notary public or a Commissioner for Oaths. I'd say that 90% of eligible people are solicitors.

A Peace Commissioner is usually free but I have never seen one in my life.

For solicitors, they can charge anything from 20 euro to 100 euro.

Mine was 50 euro if I remember correctly. The solicitor lived just beside us and was willing to do all the witness and signature on a Saturday noon in a restaurant with us.

I had 2 other witness applications which cost 20 euro and 60 euro respectively. It depends on the number of documents that you need them to witness/sign, and how urgent you need them.

Hi,
Just a quick question regarding POA. It clearly states 3 for every year claimed, would that be 3 POA for every month of the year for the x amount of years claimed or any month for each year?

Cheers

Just one of the month of the year. (E.g. one month’s electricity bill). No need to get 12 bills for that year of course.
