Gibraltar is another one, if you have a UK vsia for more than six month, you can enter Gibraltar at the discretion of immigration offical. Also check Isle of Man and Jersey entry requirements. I think you should be ok for both.

Actually I think for Switzerland you need permanent residence not just six months - certainly for Russians!

This discussion about switzerland will become irrelevant in a few months. Switzerland is joining Schengen. http://ec.europa.eu/youreurope/nav/en/c ... ex_en.html

What if someone has Permanent Residency (ILR) in the UK?

Do they need a visa to visit France, Spain, Germany and other EU countries?

If you have ILR, which is given under UK immigration route, then yes.

If you have PR, which is given under EU route, then usually no, if you have PR stamped in your passport. Though you may still have to apply for a schengen visa depending on which EU country you wish to visit. (Check particular country website. They usually say on which permits they require visas or not).

I think that's the way it goes, though others can correct or be more specific.

Switzerland joins Schengen on 1st Nov this year, dunno if that means all other visa entries are null and void....

When switzerland joins Schengen, they are relinquishing all controls over their borders and have to apply the Schengen rules.
