Police in Ireland like in the rest of Europe use PRADO.

PRADO contains basic technical descriptions, including information on security features, of authentic identity and travel documents. The information is selected and provided by document experts in the member states of the European Union (EU), Iceland, Norway and Switzerland; part of the information contained in the classified, restricted "Expert FADO" system is made publicly available via the PRADO pages. The steering committee in the Council of the European Union is currently the Working Party on Frontiers in the formation of False Documents Experts.

The travel and identity documents are categorised as follows:

Document categories:

A Passport (national passports - all types)
B Identity card
C Visa (necessary to enter a country)
E Entry paper (re-entry for own & other EU nationals)
F Driving licence
G Vehicle licence / log book
H Residence permit
I Seafarers' identity document
J Travel Document issued to non-nationals
K Train driving licence
L Crew Member Certificate / Pilot's Licence
M Certificate for operators of pleasure crafts / Captain's licence
S Special authorization card
V Authorisation to represent a company
W Work permit
X Other (travel and identity related) document
D Stamp (passport stamps)
P Civil status document

There are many forms of IDVTs to suit the different needs of users within the Irish immigration registration system .

These consist of the following parts:

A device to scan the identity document – these include specialised passport and ID card readers, smartphones, webcams, and flatbed scanners to capture an image of the document, some of which can also read chipped documents.

Software and a template library of identity documents – the software checks the security features contained on the document and compares the image of the document against a template stored in the library. Algorithms are used to draw together the results of the checks and score them to indicate whether an identity document is authentic.

Systems can also:

- systems are able to conduct checks against other data sources, which can be used by the system to help verify an identity
- systems incorporate biometric checking capabilities or other forms of technology to help prevent genuine documents from being used by impostors
- IDVTs are included as part of a wider digital service where identity documents need to be checked, such as online applications to the Disclosure and Barring Service
- IDVTs enable users to reduce their levels of paper processing and the costs of storing paper documents
inform individuals about what data is being sought and enable them to consent and to provide an audit trail for both the individual and the relying party.

There are 3 elements of a document check:

- checking whether a document is genuine – many false identity documents look real to untrained individuals who are required to check documents. IDVTs make it easier to authenticate them
- identity Document validation – even when a document is genuine, it is not possible to confirm whether or not it has been cancelled following theft or loss. Many IDVTs are able to make checks against other databases, such as Interpol’s lost and stolen passport data
- linking the holder to the document – it is often hard to match document holders to the photograph on identity documents. Sometimes the document holder’s image will have altered, for example if their hair style and colour changes. Many IDTVs include facial matching technology to enable the person checking the document to link it to the holder.

All IDVTs will check whether a document is genuine, but many systems also include checks against relevant data sources and incorporate facial matching technology to link the document to the holder.
