Travelling with an expired Pakistani passport

Hi,

My wife has a Pakistani passport and it expires this month. as she'll be travelling to her home country, can she travel on an expired passport? I've heard some people being allowed to travel on an expired passport as long as they're headed to their home country. of course on the way back they must have a renewed passport. keen to learn about the experiences of other travellers here.

p.s. i know i can get it renewed but due to lockdown, the consulate is closed and it's unclear when lockdown will be lifted.
