First British passport for child

Post by bubbly123 » Thu May 27, 2021 1:46 am

Dear gurus,
I applied for my child MN1 registration certificate and received it last week. Applied for Mn1 in the UK
and gave biometrics in UK. But for a emergency situation we travelled to India after biometrics. Now we received the registration certificate in UK but currently in India. I wanted to apply for the British passport. Should I apply from UK or India. If I apply from India the processing time is longer. My kids do not have ILR to travel back to UK. They can travel after getting the British passport. What is the best way to apply for the British passport. can I apply from UK and get the passport in UK and take it to India and travel back to UK. Please guide me.

I dont think you can apply from the UK as you need child's original passport .

Either you bring him if he has visa or apply from India

I do not think you can apply in UK IF your kid is not physically in UK.
He needs to apply via british consulate in India and attend an interview as well

Tbh, I am unaware about such a situation but I think if you can carry child’s original Indian passport to UK, have the original certificate of registration (as child was registered inside UK), it should be okay.
Note: I am not 100% sure though and stand to be corrected if wrong.

For the first uk passport, you need to submit the following document s
1.naturalisation or registration certificate
2. the passport used to enter the UK
3. any current or expired passports from other countries that haven’t been cancelled

So if a kid is not in uk want to apply first passport, you can not provide the passport used to enter uk surely

abcsusanpf - For Point no 2 - Passport is not a mandatory document to apply for British Passport, But you have to Answer "No" to the Passport application questionnaire which in bubbly123's case is not true

The Question is - "Do you have any passports from other countries?" - If you choose "YES" We should provide the passport.

Also there is a question when you start the Passport application -

The Question is - "If you’re applying on behalf of an adult or child, answer these questions with their details rather than your own." Do you live in the UK?

- So for this we should be choosing "No" as the child doesn't live in UK.

Applied from UK and received the kids British passport within a week. If you are present in the UK you can go for fast track service aswell.

Before applying I spoke to HMPO! Do you live in the UK? answer is yes! Because I was in India temporarily. Do you hold any other passport? answer is no as I am surendering my kids passport in India after MN1. After a long research I applied from UK and received my kids passport! There is lots of question answered about this in mums.net. It's straight forward. Applying from UK. If you apply from other country expect delays. Hope this helps other moderators.

Hi bubbly123,

First of all congratulations.

I am in the same boat. Could you please tell me the list of documents you have posted to HMPO in the UK as part of this application? And did you courier your child's British Passport or has someone carried to India?

Thank you.

Thank You. One other question if you don't mind. Has the Indian Passport been surrendered before obtaining British Passport or after?

Thanks a lot for the help.
