British citizen application for naturalisation

Post by Sunflower35 » Tue Jun 01, 2021 8:59 am

Hi guys

Can someone help me with the following please:

I am a British citizen and preparing my application for naturalisation , on the application form there are 2 different team CMU1 and CMU2 that the application should be sent to.
As it says on the form for EEA applicants , it should be sent to CMU1 and non EU to CMU2.

As UK is not part of EU anymore should I send my application to CMU2 or as I won’t have the ‘online residency calculator’ printout should I send it to CMU1 ? A bit confused here .

Any help is appreciated.

If you are married to Irish citizen, you need to send the application to CMU1, if not, you need to send it to CMU2. Don't use the residency calculator. It is only for non-EU applicants who have a residence permit.

British citizens should send their application to CMU1. This has been repeatedly confirmed by the Citizenship team.

A new form is expected to be released to have this updated.

While technically it is correct that UK citizens are non-EEA members now, they are still (and will continue to be) treated as EEA members in terms of citizenship applications, just like the Swiss citizens.

The whole purpose of splitting applications between the two teams is that CMU1 deals with people who do not need an IRP card (and spouse of Irish citizens for expedited processing), and CMU2 deals with people who need an IRP card. Putting UK citizens into CMU2 makes no sense as they do not and will not have an IRP card even after Brexit. Just like Switzerland who is not a member of EEA, but can still avail of everything that an EEA country is entitled to.

I guess for now you can submit the application to either unit. I hope they will update their application guideline soon when Brexit actually happens.

Here's one of the reply from the Citizenship team.
Dear Sir/Madam

Subject: Send Form 8 for UK citizens to CMU1 or CMU2?

Hi there,

On the Form 8, it says the following:

Form 8 applications for EEA nationals and Spouse of Irish national, post
to: Citizenship Applications (CMU 1)

Form 8 applications for Non EEA nationals, post to: Citizenship
Applications (CMU 2)

Can you please confirm for UK nationals, should the application be sent to
CMU 1 or CMU 2?
