A UK issued BRP card does not give visa free travel privileges (not a travel document) - it is a UK only document. Spouse will need to apply for a visa, for example to enter the EU Schengen area.

I understand that you should apply for a Schengen visa to the country where you will spend most of your time - so arriving in Italy and moving on to France should be ok. But please review the EU guidance on this: https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/what- ... en_visa_en
