Eligibility to register on the Foreign Births Register

Post by placidh » Tue Jul 20, 2021 11:04 am

Hi all

This is probably a long shot, but want to see what y'all say. Looking to see what chance I'd have for registering on the FBR / Foreign Births Register.

Here's the Irish line of descent:

* Great grandmother born in Ireland: October 1886
* Grandfather born in South Africa: circa 1913
* Father born in South Africa: 1938. Did not register on FBR (FBR came into effect in 1956 of course)
* I was born in South Africa in 1984. Am dreaming of registering on the FBR

Do I have any chance or am I dreaming?

Unfortunately, because your dad wasn't registered on the FBR before you birth you are not eligible.

If your grandfather was born in Ireland you would have been eligible irrespective of your father/ mother.
