No surname in Indian passport - British passport

Post by TarunS8317 » Fri Sep 02, 2022 5:33 pm

Hi,

I have recently applied for a British passport. However there is an issue with what name will be printed on the British passport - as my Indian passport does not have a surname (and only a given name).

Eg: Indian Passport states -
Given Name :John Smith
Surname : (blank)

I have since spoken to the British passport examiner who has given me 2 options for the name on the British passport:

1) Have my given name as xxx & surname as John Smith
2) Get my Indian passport updated to include a surname & a UK deed poll to change my name. Then resubmit these to get forename & surname printed in British passport.
i.e get Indian passport as -
Given Name : John ;
Surname : Smith.

My question is can I get my Indian passport updated after receiving my Naturalisation certificate as I am legally a British citizen?

What is the best way to get my name on the British passport printed where given name is John and surname is Smith?

Thanks.

That is a question about Indian law, not UK law, and we may not have detailed knowledge of such a niche question. I will move this question to the Other Countries forum.

Apply for a British passport under Option (1) in your original post. Then change your name by deed poll and apply for another British passport with the new name.

Once you have acquired foreign nationality no consular services will be provided by the govt of India e.g. change of particulars in passport/renewal etc.
