Are Ontario common law partners considered family members for EU shengen visa

Post by fisyr » Mon Mar 20, 2023 3:58 pm

I am currently filling out the touristic Visa form for my girlfriend with whom we live in Canada. Essentially we want to visit my family in Prague and I am not sure if I can fill her marital status as single or "other".

We are what is considered here in Ontario common law partners. It is as far as I know different from being registered partners which is something far more common in Europe. Common law simply means that we lived together continuously for one year, are in a relationship and share expenses together: we used this status to apply for a permanent residence in Canada together and paid taxes as a single household, so as far as Canadian law is concerned, we are family.

I am not however sure if European countries would recognize us as family members, so I wanted to ask for advice what would be the best way to fill out this form. Should I just put single, registered partner or other and specify that we are common law partners under Ontario law?

Is your girlfriend Canadian?

Quote from https://www.mzv.cz/toronto/en/visa_and_ ... profitable.

"Canadian citizens holding valid passport do not require to have a visa to enter the Czech Republic/Schengen Area for stay not exceeding 90 days in any 180 days period, provided that the stay is non-profitable."

So the question isn't really relevant - but in general I would select "single" ...

No, she's from Ecuador, which is one of the countries that do require a visa.
I guess I should probably put single.
