Universal credit

Post by Kian2537 » Sun Jan 15, 2023 5:19 pm

Hi friends

Both my wife and I have ILR, I work in UK, but my wife does not work. Is she eligible to apply for universal credit?

I'm assuming your wife lives in the UK? Universal Credit cannot be claimed outside of the UK?

Universal Credit is a joint claim, so you would have to apply as a couple.

Both are expected to work/be a jobseeker, unless there is an exemption.

UC is for low income households. Have you tried one of the benefit calculalators to see if your income and joint capital is too high to claim UC?

As said above, it will have to be a joint UC claim, but be aware that under the budget last month, the UK announced the intention to move to the next stage of UC at a future date. This will end the, one parent not working as their partner works their required hours as well as their own, under their UC claimant commitment. Under the changes, both parents will be required to meet their own UC claimant commitment to avoid a sanction to their joint UC payment.
