For nationality applications, the date of application is the date the application is actually received by the Home Office (not by NCS or by Royal Mail).

On the other hand, the date of receipt for visa applications is the date of posting.

Is it possible to submit a passport application prior to the ceremony? and do councils conduct ceremony during saturdays?

No, you cannot submit your passport application before your ceremony because you won't have your naturalisation number yet. It will be on the naturalisation certificate that they give you during the ceremony.

You can fill out the other parts ahead of time. Technically, your referees should not sign it until *after* your ceremony, but if neither of you cares... Some people bring their referees to the ceremony, have them sign the passport application after, and post it on the way home (same day).

Not sure about Sat ceremonies, but I believe some Councils have weekend appointments. Best to call yours to make sure.

So I need referees' signature again? but I dont see the point when we've already provided references for the naturalisation application. Oh well..anyawy, it's what they require so no mtter how pointless it may be, we have no choice but to follow it..

Yup, sorry! You can get a passport application from the post office and start filling it out... Also check ips.gov.uk for more info on the process.

Wow.. Very fast! Have you left the UK often in the past 5 years? I just wonder if the reason that your application was processed very quick is because you have not left the country much so it's easy for them to check your document and approve.

Congratulation!

That really was quick. Considering the Xmas and New Year holiday breaks your appication took about a month. Congrats.

Resident in UK 5 years before the application is made

Post by shanc » Tue Feb 10, 2009 2:52 pm

Folks,
i am a newbie to this forum, and want a help from the experts.

I have completed my 6 years stay in UK, got my ILR in Nov-2007. So it is 5 yrs + 1 yr(ILR)=6 yrs. I guess I am eligible for naturalisation.
I am exactly not very sure if the requirement says

"you have to be in the UK 5 years from the date the application is received by HO" or
"you have to be in the UK 6 years from the date the application is received by HO"

If it is 6 years, it goes back to Feb-2003, and I was outside the UK.But if it is 5 years, I will be Okay.

The guide to form AN says 5 years, but this website says 6 years:
http://www.workpermit.com/uk/naturalisation.htm

Please help me.
Lots of thanks :?:

Here is my update..

NCS or Postal: NCS Bracknell
Date of submission or posting: 31 Dec 2008
CRITERIA: 3 years (British Citizen's Spouse)
Date of receipt of App @ HO: 3 Jan 2009
Date of debit of debit/credit card: 31 Dec 2008 (paid by credit card at NCS office)
Date of receipt of acknowledgement: 9 Jan 2009
Date of receipt of approval: 10 Feb 2009 (letter dated 4 Feb 2009
Invitation Letter: Called Council for Private Ceremony w/c 16 Feb 2009
Date of Ceremony: w/c 16 Feb 2009
Date of appln. for passport: N/A
Method used: N/A

Even I have been in and out a lot in the past 3 years, my approval is pretty quick so I don't think the frequent travels is a factor for processing speed.

Congratulations to all who have received their approvals so quickly!

However, it appears as if Home Office is randomly picking applications out of sequence and processing them (I am sure this is not the case but whatever it is, I can't understand).

Mine was received at the HO on 21/10/2008 but still waiting. It is the simplest of cases. During the last 6+ years that I've been here, I've been out of the UK for only 70-odd days, been in full time professional employment every single day, always received my salaries net so no tax issues, no criminal convictions, no attempts to calim any undue benefits. Can't see any complications - simple WP (2 years) -> HSMP (3 years) -> ILR (1 year) -> Naturalisation route.

Some people who applied a few days before me received their approvals over a month ago. Many who applied 2-3 months after me have got theirs recently. Could someone advise what could possibly be wrong?
