This is an area for the discussion of matters related to issues about moving from one country to another. Examples could be about money transfer, moving and packing, validity of driving licence, etc..

Flying from India - any tax clearance required? or ECNR?

Post by paperwork » Sat May 09, 2009 5:50 pm

Hello!

My question is for those Indians who have moved to UK on TIER 1 VISA or other Tiers.

I am going to leave for UK soon from India (delhi/mumbai). I want to know if at Indian airports, you guys were asked following :

1. Do they ask you for Income tax Clearance certificate when you leave Indian airport?

2. 'Emmigration Clearnace Not Required' stamp.

Please let me know.

Cheers!

No they do not.

If your passport says Emmigration Check Required, you are in for some trouble mate. The Emmigration officer will have to make a number of checks and this might take anything between 2-6 hrs. If you have a Degree, its very easy to get the ECR changed to ECNR.[/quote]

If you have Degree, it is better to get ECNR done. It only take a day from your local passport office. It will save you lot of trouble at airport.

THANKS Chetan and pushhsmp

I don't know if it is only a trouble when one is traveling for the first time.
I have travelled before but once on student visa other on work permit.

It was the first time i had trouble but they let me go after i argued that the ECR stamp was only for few countries.

I guess it will be better to get it stamped.

Thanks for ur time.
Cheers!

Out of interest, how does a degree help get the ECR changed to ECNR?

Drjabberwocky23
the website gives the requirements for ECNR.

http://passport.gov.in/pms/EMIGRATION%2 ... 0STAMP.htm

It does also mention
"Note : No emigration clearance is required for visiting Bangladesh, Pakistan and all countries in Europe (excluding CIS states), North America, Australia, Japan and New Zealand,South Korea,South Africa and Singapore ."

So I guess, I shouldn't be asked for Emmigration clearance, if one is travelling to UK.

Cheers!

The understanding is that degree holders are educated and lucid and usually emigrate to take up skilled / highly skilled jobs abroad.

In the case of low skilled and semi skilled labour migrants who do not hold degrees, the authorities want to make sure that they are not being fleeced with promises of jobs abroad. This is what an officer in the passport office told me once.

Better get a ECNR and travel. It doesn't cost more (may be less than Rs. 500) and could save you lot of time. you will need your passport and Degree certificate to get it done. Not much hassles.
All new passports(i guess after Oct 2007) have inbuilt ECNR in it.
