How to Categorize Expereince

I am a qualified engineer. I have had expereince in Mech Engineering for 4.5 years from 1996 onwards but later I took up a job in IT. I donot hold a formal degree in IT but I have been realted to IT ever since. Can any body help that if I apply then under which profession and will my whole expereince be couted.
