In person applications if I don't work in the UK?

Post by oilman » Wed Jun 17, 2009 4:00 pm

Hi all,

Can I apply for Tier 1 General via the in person applications in Croydon?

I work in the Middle East but I travel to London quite frequently.

In person applications are meant for "straight forward cases" which does not seem to be your situation.

Ae you applying for switching into T-1 or an extension?

Tier-1 is meant for "straightforward applications", which does not seem to be the case here.

Is your application for switching or extension?

I am applying for Tier 1 General from scratch. I used to live & study in the UK for 4 years, up to MEng. Then, I left after uni & worked in Latin America, and now in the Middle East. I scored 125 points on the points calculator & satisfy all the requirements.

As for banking statements, I bank in the US & UK and the Middle East is only 2 hours difference in terms of timezone, so they can still verify my payslip via the phone. I have no dependents.

What do you mean by "straightforward application"?

I understand that initial applications for Tier 1 can't be made in-person at a PEO.

However, senior members please verify this.

Do you visit UK frequently on Business Visa? If you do, you cannot apply inperson unless you are under compatible visa category. If you have UK work permit(which it doesn't seem) or some compatible visa category then I think you can apply. BUT it seems very obvious from the details you have posted that HO caseworker will have to spend lot of time to verify your document as some of them are from US and Middle East.

Straight Forward case mentioned by Push means if you are under compatible visa category e.g. work permit, working/living in UK, have all documents in place (which can be verified easily on the same day or instantly) so that HO caseworker can make decision on the same day. But if HO caseworker has to run from piller to post to get the verification, it defeat the purpose of same day application. Isn't it?

Thanks chetanojha, I visit UK frequently and I don't need a visa due to a visa waiver.

I still have my old UK bank account when I was studying here in the UK and I just need to move my money to here. As for verifying my payslips, it's only a call away since the time difference is only 2 hours.

Do you think it's still possible this way?

No!

Visitors are not allowed to apply for tier 1 within UK. You have to obtain an entry clearance from the nearest UK high commision / consulate in your country of residence.

thanks SKUK, but do you think if I move my money over to the UK instead of leaving it in my US account, it'll speed up the application?

Due to my job, I can't lose access to my passport for very long periods of time.

I don't suppose so. If HO does decide to verify your bank statements, the time it takes to do that depends on the promptness with which which your bank responds to the queries irrespective of the geographical location. For all you know the UK bank may sit on it longer than the US bank.

Mention the bank's contact details in your covering letter. That might help.

If you are in the UK as a visitor, you cannot apply for Tier 1, or more correctly you can but the application will be refused and you will not get a refund of the fee. You may also have problems coming to the UK again as a visitor without prior entry clearance because you have shown that you intend to work in the UK.

You will have to apply outside the UK.

You will have to apply as an out-of-country applicant only. Your VISA will be processed in your present country only and will not travel to UK.
