UK Citizen Marrying in India

Post by paz112 » Thu Jun 25, 2009 6:24 pm

I am going to India this summer with a view to getting married.
I'm unsure of the changes in the law which I know have become more sticter.
Both have to be now 21 in order for UK settlement, however I have also read that I have to declare my intentions of getting married before I leave the UK?

Is this True, has this law been implemented already?

Any help/advice would be well appreciated!

I don't think that law has been passed as yet!

Are you getting an arranged marriage? You need to think carfefully here as you need to show that the marriage is genuine. I.e Photos & contact.

Depends what you mean arranged. It's not forced, they will prob just show me some girls and I'll choose.

I dont even know who it may be yet! That a long time to be wating..don't they usually give visa once you have married?

My friend stick around, read this forum, search old posts, and find out what the process entails, it a lot more than you think.

I got married in Sept 2008, but my wife only turned 21 this month, hence the wait.

Once you get married you have to go apply for a settlement visa, which in India takes around 12 weeks, (this figure could be less and could be more).

Main things you need to show:

- That the marriage is genuine
- You have suitable accomodation
- Finance (i.e regular income)

There is a lot more but try doing a search on this forum and you'll see lots of lists of the evidence folders people have put together.

That looks like a lot of hard work, why do they ask for all this. There can't really stop you form bringing her over. It must infringe your human rights somehow?

They don't specifically ask for all this, but because my wife is from the sub-continent and also she has just turned 21, I wanted to proove that the marriage was genine and not i.e "forced".

I want my my wife over here ASAP so we can start our lives together, I've been waiting 3.5 years already (waiting for her to finish studies, planning the weding etc.) If it means that it makes the ECOs task easier to grant my wifes Visa, than I'm more than happy to put in the extra bit of hard work.
