International driving licence query

Post by sjidh » Thu Jul 30, 2009 2:39 am

Hi all,

Whats the difference of having Indian driving licence and International driving licence in UK?
I heard both are valid for 1 year from the day i land in UK.
Please let me know if somebody has any idea @ this.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Sjidh

An international driving permit (to give it it's proper title) isn't a license, it is just a multiple language translation of an existing driver's license, complete with photograph and vital statistics.

I don't think the UK actually requires you to have one, though if your license isn't in English it is probably a good idea to have one.

You can drive on your Indian Driving license for first one year immediate after you land in UK. After this one year, you are required to get full UK driving license.

One benefit of an International Dr permit is, its less of a hassle getting car hire in UK and more so in European countries. Some car rental agencies insist on seeing the International dr permit whether or not your licence is in English. As far as driving your own car in UK is concerned - no difference whatsoever.

Though 1yr allowance is legal, I suggest you to get UK license asap.

The similarity between Indian & UK driving ends with being "left-hand side drive".
There are lots of rules which we wouldn't have followed (eg turning in a roundabout) but you need to be aware & practise them here.

So better be safe with this.
