Not too sure about discretionary route, is there no way under the current immigration schemes to slot in and get extended visa's?

Is there no way your hubby can look for similar employers as he was in and see if they will not sponsor him for another permit?

Biggie.

Hi
Since you have a post study work permit , have you tried to apply for a Tier 1 (general) and putting your husband on it as a dependent.
