COA and passport withdrawal

Hi guys,

me and my fioncee (british) applied for a certificate of approval, it's been more than 2 months so far, and now he has to go abroad and needs his passport, who knows how that could affect the application process, whould he need to send his passport back to the HO after he comes back from abroad??
Please let me know asap,

I had to ask for our passports and the lady told my fiancé that doing so didn't interfere with the process.

No, she didn't say, but she did say, that it will take 15 working days to get them back.
