British Nationality

Post by ax154u » Tue Jun 15, 2004 8:37 am

I was recently given ILR after being in the UK for 5 years :D .

How soon may I apply for British Citizenship? I have read the different forms and I believe that I can apply immediately as I seem to fit the criteria. But the fees are quite high and I do not want to waste my money unnecesarily. I am married to a UK Citizen but my preference is to apply in my own right.

If you apply on your 'own' basis you must hold ILR for a minimum of 12 months. If you apply on the basis of the 'spouse of a BC' then you can apply immediatley. In both cases you must meet the residence and other appropriate requirements e.g. good character, being of sound mind etc.
