Enquiry about Passport Application

Post by peto121 » Tue Feb 14, 2012 10:01 pm

Hi Dear All,

I'm an EEA national and hold both identity card and passport.

As I'm going to apply my British Passport for the first time in tweo weeks after obtaining my naturalisation certificate, may I ask if I could leave UK and make any travel plans in Europe by using my EU identity card while in the process of my new passport application?

Thank you very much in advance and look forward to your reply!

Yes. However you will need to be back in the uk for the identity interview which normally takes place about 2-3 weeks after the application.

According to my knowledge the answer is No because ur EEA nationality will be withdrawn once you become British Citizen. So u have to wait until u receive ur british passport.

European citizens can't have 2 european nationalities at a time...

Depends on country. Most of the EU countries allow dual nationality.

Thanks so much for your response!

I've checked information regarding dual nationality since I started my application of British Citizenship, and I could confirm that dual nationality is permitted.

Thank you very much again!

There are some countries which don't allow 2 european nationalities. For example, Germany and Austria usually do not allow dual citizenship except for persons who obtain more than one citizenship at the time of birth. Netherlands(Holland) doesn't allow dual european nationality either :)

At least Germany and the Netherlands allow dual nationality in certain conditions (even if not obtained from birth).

Germany allows dual nationality if the new one is an EU citizenship.
The Netherlands allows citizen who are naturalised via their Dutch spouse to keep their original nationality.

Don't know about Austria.
