Do new citizens have to be registered on Electoral Register?

Post by kingcedz » Mon Apr 30, 2012 5:54 pm

When my wife received her naturalisation certificate she was given a "New British Citizen Voter Registration" form to be registered on the Electoral Registry.

Is it compulsory? will there be any negative consequences for not register on Electoral Registry, other than unable to vote?

The other negative consequences is that electoral roll info appears on your credit reference agency file which will impact your credit score. May not be a major consideration but in addition to loans/ credit cards etc your credit score is increasingly being used to price insurance, in employee referencing etc

You haven't said why your wife doesn't want to register, surely its an easy process.

I was wondering the same thing. As above, enrolment is compulsory for those who are eligible to enrol but voting is not.

Not sure why it's a negative consequence; in fact, I'd consider it a positive one, since not being registered on the electoral roll can lower your credit score.

PS As pointed out, the only foreigners who can register on the electoral roll are EU and Commonwealth citizens.

One negative (?) effect is that one becomes liable for jury service.
