No work, ways to secure a contract in UK

Dear members,

I am looking for some advise on my personal situation. I am on Tier 1 General Visa and out of work. I got the first visa in Feb 2011 and have spent the last one year outside of UK. Since the extension is now due in Feb 2013, I am in dire need of work (contract) to fulfill the earnings. What is the best way to secure a contract? I have tried for a week to look at job portals but even with a good skill-set, agents won't forward the CV to the employer. Does anyone know of an agency that helps?

If Tier 1 General cannot be extended, what are the ways to switch to Tier 2 General Category? I am into IT Service Management which is NOT on the occupation shortage list.

Apparently there is a strict key word search on CV's and if its not a perfect match they would drop you off the list no matter how extensive your experience is. Plus there is a limit of only 2-3 top CV's per agent for a job, they can't forward all. Some of it is also driven by prejudice - based on how your name sounds or how you sound on the phone. Non-English is sometimes considered non-good (if that's a word).

I may be wrong but that's my experience.

Well I don't understand why you stayed out of the UK for one year? How did you expect to make the income requirement in less time? Were you going to make a plea on the application of some sort. What exactly is your strategy?

I had family commitments so I had to stay away.

Well, I could still earn the required amount as my role commands a good day rate but only if I am allowed to interview!

I don't think I could make a plea as its an "all or none law" either you qualify or you don't. I was reading your post elsewhere where you said you were able to do it but I think that's a thing of the past.

Apply directly to employers rather than going through an agent-and expect to spend far longer than a week looking for work.

Thanks Greenie, I do plan to invest some time into it. Applying directly may not always be an option as the right roles usually come through agents... I will where I can.

this is the http://www.theitjobboard.co.uk specialist IT board. what type of skills u have ? "IT Service Management " means u manage a team or IT infrastructure ?

yea I think your job role is useful for large corporations/ companies try the link above and see if they hiring

It is relatively difficult to get a managerial job in UK. If your CV highlight your managerial skills I recommed you reformat the CV to suit as an skilled worker.
