Surrender Indian passport + apply tourist visa on same day?

Hi All,

My Son has applied for his British passport and we need to travel to India asap.. Please can you advice me if

1) I can apply for tourist Visa without surrendering Indian passport?

2) Can I surrender Indian passport and apply for tourist visa on the same day in person?

Your quick response will be greatly appreciated.
