Searched and coudn't find a dedicated thread for this issue, PROVIDE REFERENCE - Asked by agents or consultants , termed as Job reference or Technical reference etc.
I am in UK for more than 3.5 yrs and worked in 2 different companies.now in search of job as I am out of contract (for last 2.5 months now

Scenario
Searching for job ? , u get loads of calls from consultants , who have found different ways of getting reference. Some ask directly without even giving any job offers for you. Some give you high hopes of telling you of good job offer with handful sal/pay then comes the question of reference, Recently one was trying to tell me that her client intend to take candidate onboard immediately just with/without a telephone interview even ,bec its urgent and need reference to do the checks immdeately ??? , I have even been invited by consultants and been offered coffee and beer and asked to give reference, they give a statement that they wont contact these references, just name is sufficient etc................................... Fed up of this issue ..
Personal opinion
Never give any reference or entertain these consultants, until you get in to the level of signing the contract or finishing all the rounds of interview. To my knowledge no company(employer) upfront asks for references ???Correct me if I am wrong. So I use to tell them until that I cant give references until I reach atleast final level of interview. And some never leave you ,telling "oh then we cant goahead with this application" etc , dont worry even if you give reference , nothing is going to come your way.Infact I am sure by giving reference , it will create issues for your boss and when one genuine call goes for your own check to your manager , You might fail,as he would have been already frustrated with calls.
Just to avoid agents getting on to my nerves I even have told my collegues names who are not working currently in that company, which atleast stops phone call to the reception level and not beyond that as they will get asnwer "he/she is not working anymore in the organisation"

Help
Gurus, other senior members and job seekers , You are welcome to to criticize me and correct me where ever I am wrong in the above which will shed light on this issue for me and to all who will certainly come across such problem ....
For me, I have completed my work in a UK's leading bank,so agents try in all ways to get reference because they know that I am out of work for 2.5 months now and they know that I will be ready to give references as I will be desperate to get a job.I have even been bullied by certain agents when they found they are not going to get any references... What to do ....
Kind regards
Raj
