Question Regarding Re-entry as an FBR Dual Citizen

Post by mww101 » Tue Feb 11, 2025 4:40 pm

Hello all,

I am currently a student studying abroad in Ireland for the semester and was incorrectly stamped with a tourist stamp upon entering Ireland. I am a dual-citizen, and have a copy of an official (notarized) Foreign Birth Registration. My question is this: if I were to leave the country and go back to America, would I encounter any difficulty in re-entering Ireland if I were to present this document at Customs and apply for a stamp 6? I cannot see any reason why this would not work but I am not very well versed in Immigration law and am coming to this forum for advice. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure how Customs would handle it. My advice would be to go to Customs before you leave Ireland and get it sorted out. The first thing they'll ask is why didn't you get an Irish passport. A notarized copy of the FBR certificate instead of the original may be an issue as well. In any case, don't wait until you are returning to get an official answer. Good Luck

First of all, Customs has nothing to do with your identity checks. You are talking about border control.

Ireland is one of the very few countries that allow dual nationals to enter Ireland with a foreign passport. You can legally enter Ireland using your foreign passport (assuming you still have a valid visa/IRP or you are from a visa-free country), as long as you can prove to the border control that you have Irish citizenship. A copy of FBR certificate will be sufficient. It doesn’t really matter what stamp they give you at the border as long as you present both the foreign passport and a copy of FBR cert.

This stamp gives you nothing on its own and it's not something that is put in your passport at the border ("stamp" name is a bit misleading I know) - it's more of a type of residency permission. I very much doubt it'll be beneficial for you to apply for it.
